A Futuristic High School in the Making

Howell's Parker High School Is Currently Under Construction

Parker High School, expected to house about 1,300 high school students, is currently under construction in Howell, Michigan at a cost of $72 million. This 310,000 square foot facility will feature partner space, including joint use with Lansing Community College, a bank, a possible health clinic, and a food vendor. The main lobby will house an information mall, including a “What’s Next” space for parents and students to discuss post-high school planning with counselors. A two-story media center will feature an audio/sound download lab as well as a cyber café where students will be able to have juice and a pastry as they catch up on news through media, wireless technology, and print periodicals. A ninth-grade academy, aimed at personalizing the transition from middle school to high school, will feature teams of teachers working with about 350 students in a small learning community setting. Once half of its population moves to Parker, Howell High School will undergo reconstruction and new additions. A central consideration in both schools will be a move to issue credit for demonstrated competence in courses that present multiple instructional delivery approaches.
