Achieve Answers the Many Questions About High School Reform
As Michigan schools prepare to implement high school curriculum changes, questions naturally arise. Achieve has put together a number of Common Concerns Fact Sheets to address some of the most frequently asked questions.
The Fact Sheets—available through the Achieve Web site at www.achieve.org/node/667—include answers in the form of PowerPoint presentations and various other formats, to the following questions:
- Do all students need a college-prep
curriculum?
- Do all students need challenging math in high school?
- Requiring readiness: Can all students benefit?
- Will raising high school graduation requirements cause more students to drop out?
- If we raise standards in high school, won’t students become more disengaged?

“By enacting the Michigan Merit Curriculum, the Michigan Legislature and Governor Granholm… the State Board of Education and the Department of Education have catapulted Michigan from the state that demanded among the least…to one of the states that demands the most. Enacting the Michigan Merit Curriculum required political leadership and courage. Implementing it well will require the skill and dedication of Michigan’s
educators, a challenge they are surely up to.”
